For Lena's birthday in 2008, we celebrated the event with our neighbors, Tom and Angie.
Lena had not often previously played with 'noise makers' and demonstrated her ability to 'make it go!'
Sometimes it is difficult to coordinate getting together with them since Angie's husband is working the night shift as a veteran San Diego policeman and Angie's hours as a RE Salesperson are similarly demanding.
However, we enjoy their company and are happy to wait until they can work us into their schedule...and Lena enjoys Angie's BAKERY TREATS!
In April 2008, we were excited to hear from Joe and Bev Dawson who had served with Steve at NAS Atsugi, Japan in the early 1970's. They were passing through San Diego and wanted to get together for dinner while they were in town. Lena had previously met Bev & Joe at our 'Atsugi Reunion' in Washington, DC in 2007...
...and had very much enjoyed their company. Since they were staying at a hotel on Harbor Island, we had a very enjoyable dinner at the Boat House and discussed what had been happening in our lives during the last year. We definitely look forward to seeing them again!
In September 2008...after being enticed with an offer of FREE OMAHA STEAKS...Steve went for a test drive of the new 2009 Maserati QUATTROPORTE at the La Jolla dealership.
Needless to say, as a result of the 2008 stock market sell-off (and devastation of Moi's portfolio), he did NOT have an extra $130K in loose 'pocket change' available for upgrading automobiles!
However, at that time only several such vehicles were available in this country and being able to test drive one was rather exciting. More information re this luxury car is available on the Maserati dealer's web site.

In April 2009 George and Mei-Ling stopped in San Diego to visit with us during their move from their 'winter home' in Hawaii to their 'summer home' in New Hampshire. When they had to extend their stay by one day due to problems with their flight reservations...

(See photos at our home of their visit.) ...we decided to go to Coronado and show them the Hotel Del. Since Lena had just had a birthday, George & Mei-Ling treated her to a wonderful low calorie 'tasty-treat' in this photo.
The Coronado beach behind the Hotel Del is world famous for its beautiful white sand dunes.
George looks as if he is trying to figure out how to use his little electronic toy!
I'm not quite sure WHY so many of our photos with George and Mei-Ling always---one way or another---involve EATING or FOOD! However, the 'bottom line' is we always enjoy getting together with George and Mei-ling and just wish they did not live so far away from us.
For Lena's birthday in 2009, we got together with Angie and Tom and Charleen (Kane) and went to Bully's. (For Lena, this was the first time she had been to Bully's.)
Needless to say, we definitely enjoyed celebrating this special occasion with these very special friends...and, of course, the dessert was OUTSTANDING!
As mentioned in the Christmas 2010 photos taken at our home, our most precious 'gift' was having Anya take two weeks from her busy schedule in Chicago to spend with us.
In addition, however, Anya insisted on taking us to the Hotel Del in Coronado so that we could all enjoy their Christmas Buffet. To say that the buffet was 'outstanding' is a mild understatement...
...and we ended up gorging ourselves for over three hours!
As we exited the Hotel Del, we had to take several photos of the beautiful Christmas decorations in the Hotel Lobby.
