My
visit to Singapore (as part of a 3-week Far Eastern tour) was only for
2 days and one night, so my opportunities to see much of the city were
quite limited.
However,
I was impressed with the huge number of ships which crowded Singapores
harbor.

As
part of the tour, we were taken to a small fishing village outside the
city. These families all lived in extremely small shacks which were
built on wooden piers which lined the shores.
To
say that these people had very little in the way of even the most basic
of amenities (like stoves, refrigerators, and TVs) is a mild understatement.
However,
based on the number of children running all over the place, I did figure
out WHAT the adults did at NIGHT instead of watching TV!
We
walked through the streets of Singapore and took a few photos of the
street vendors and local markets.
But,
I did NOT even consider eating any of these gourmet delights!
This
woman is wearing one of the colorful silk dresses for which Singapore
is well known.
And,
after watching this sidewalk snake charmer do his thing with his little
pet...
...Steve
decided to try wrapping the sucker around HIS NECK. (I dont remember
the level of my blood-alcohol content at the time, BUT, Ive NEVER
had any desire to repeat this adventure!)

Pewter
ware was a very popular product which was produced in Singapore and
could be purchased at very good prices in local stores.
But,
Singapores silk clothing was one of the biggest attractions for
women...
...and
there were many local vendors who carried a wide selection of locally
manufactured clothing items.
Even
back in the 1970s, these stores were attractively stocked and
well merchandised.
